The State of Eritrea is a country in northeastern Africa on the shores of the Red Sea. It covers an area of ??117,600 square kilometers, and has a population of 3,546,000 and is (132nd in the world), according to the United Nations average estimate for 2020.
It faces the Red Sea to the east, borders Sudan to the west, Ethiopia to the south, and Djibouti to the southeast. The capital is Asmara.
It is one of the newest independent states with independence from Ethiopia on May 24, 1993.
Eritrea has a de jure transitional government while in practice it has been governed since the time of independence from a party. No parliamentary or presidential elections have been held in Eritrea so far.
Following a referendum on the independence of the Eritrean Autonomous Region on April 23-25, 1993, a National Assembly was formed, consisting exclusively of members of the Popular Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ).
A constitutional committee was also set up to draft a Constitution. The interim parliament elected Isaiah Afewerki as president. The 1997 Constitution was never implemented, although it was ratified, and the elections scheduled for 2001 were postponed indefinitely.
Today the only legal party is the PFDJ. In essence, Eritrea is a one-party state while the only elections that take place are for the election of local mayors. Those who are 18 years of age or older have the right to vote in the elections.
